What You Should Know Before Buying

Buying a home is an exciting opportunity to fulfill dreams and make new beginnings.  It’s also a very complicated process requiring an understanding of how to:

bullet obtain financing
bullet document your ability to repay a loan
bullet negotiate a fair price that fits your lifestyle and your other financial commitments
bullet protect your investment

Professionals will help you through this process, BUT you will be the one making the payments! You should know what information to give, what questions to ask, and how to evaluate the answers you receive so you can make informed decisions. That’s where homebuyer education workshops can help. We can’t teach you everything. We’ll help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a shopper and a homeowner. OHEA-approved programs include information on:

bullet The homebuying process, affording a home, and using your credit to get a loan
bullet Shopping for a home, finding financing sources, loan application and closing processes
bullet Life as a homeowner, home maintenance, and avoiding foreclosure

Most workshops are free - some may have a small charge for materials or lunch.

Persons with Disabilities: We have advised our providers and professionals to be sensitive to your needs when attending workshops as well as in finding a home. Persons with disabilities, and their custodial families, may be eligible for special loans and programs that lending and real estate professionals are not always familiar with. We recommend that you contact the community action agency that services your county for further information.
